Looks pretty nice. That paint has quite a sheen to it, though. Could the paint be wet?

Is the frame doubling as the gas tank like some of his other work? Because the wall of that frame is huge!

yep. IDK about the oil reservoir though. I think that has gone back to a regular sump, not in the swing arm as it was before.

Hey Peter!

Hope you’re doing well man! Don’t know if you’d remember me, but we chatted a while back regarding motorcycles. I was hemming and hawing getting a bike, but ended up pulling the trigger on a Ninja 300 this past July and have been loving riding ever since.

Anyways, wanted to reach out as you gave some great advice a while back about starting small vs. jumping into a SV650, which was what I originally planned to purchase as my first bike. With the season coming to an end in the next few weeks here in Iowa, I’ve been thinking of picking up another bike for next season, as usually it’s easier to get a deal from an owner who doesn’t want to store the bike over the winter.

The bike I’m looking at in particular is the Triumph Daytona 675R w/ABS. I found a solid deal on a 2013 model with low miles, and what appears to be a mature and sensible owner - the sole owner of the bike. I checked this bike out at a shop this weekend, and loved it. I love the looks, the aggressive ergos, etc. It’s just great.

My question for you: do you think it’s too big of a jump from the 300? My riding is entirely recreational - primarily country road “sport” riding and some sightseeing. I wear race leathers + back protector, etc., when I ride. Comfort is definitely secondary. Next year I plan to do a couple of track days as well.

I’m considering an SV650S as well, but the market for those in my area is...less than ideal.

Appreciate the input, as always.

Daytonas are FAST bikes man. with so little riding, I cant say Id recommend one. if you had a couple of years of riding on the 300 (maybe even a track day or two) then i would have okay it. as it sits, no.

Note, that your first year isn’t your most dangerous. its your second and third year where bad shit happens. that, coupled with huge, huge jump in hp is a little concerning.

I would do a track day or two on the 300. You will be amazed at what you can learn (and its easier to learn on the 300s...not to mention cheaper). and keep an eye out for an SV if you HAVE to have a new bike next year. even if you find one that’s a little rougher, but you can get it for cheap. SV LOVE to be flogged, and there is tons of aftermarket and guides for them.

as it sits, I don’t think you have the experience for it (the right mindset, yes. experiance, no)

Yea, that’s kind of where I’m at with it as well.

I do like the SV650S - checked one out yesterday and it just felt like the “right” next step up from the Ninja. They are pretty inexpensive overall, the problem is finding a decent one within a 3 hour drive of me. I’m in a fairly rural area and finding an SV650S that is stock or at least has tasteful mods is a bit of a chore.

I’ve had a ton of fun on the Ninja, but it gets a bit wheezy at highway speeds. Has no problem maintaining 70-75, but it’s working hard there (high rpms). Would like a bit more passing power on the country roads I’m on as well. Of course, that’s a want and not a need. Brakes are also not great.

Definitely doing track days next year. Felt like it’d be a bit too much to throw at me my first few months, but there’s a decent track about 2 hours away that I plan to trailer my bike out to.

for brakes: change out pads, fluid and stainless steel lines. it improves the feel of them DRASTICALLY.

honestly, Id just buy the first SV that runs. body work and everything for them is cheap, and chances are you will end up doing something to the suspension anyways.

Lowest miles, and price. the rest? meh.
